Mimar Sinan Üniversitesi'nde 19 Mart 2001 günü mimar YUNUS ARAN'ın anısına düzenlenen konferansta Sayın Mehmet Konuralp’in “Tasarım Kaliteleri” başlıklı konuşması:
Bursa'da “Tasarımda Kaliteler” şeklinde bildiri için hazırlamıştık. Metinde çok fazla mimari yok, bunun nedeni de, mimarlığın içinde çok fazla mimarlığın olmadığından geliyor; benim kendi ilkelerim doğrultusunda böyle görüyorum. Çünkü mimarlık esasında hayatı tanımlamakla başlıyor ve orada bitiyor. Bunu ne kadar iyi özümleyebilirseniz zaten mimarlığın adını vermiş oluyorsunuz…. Restrospektif olarak iç dünyamı da yansıtacağı için, sanıyorum belirli bir noktaya gelebileceğim.
Konuşmanın ağırlığını hatta hemen hemen hepsini epeyi senelerdir üzerinde çalıştığım uğraştığım başlıklar oluşturuyor:

İLK BİÇİMLER YANİ ARKETİPLER
Tabiatta, kainatta bütün canlılar ve cansızlar bir sürü frekanslarda belli SİNYALLER veriyor. Bu frekanslar belli türler içinde anlaşılıyor ve onun dışında pek fazla deşifre edilemiyor. Bu bütün kainatta geçerli, insanlar için de geçerli. Bu sinyallerin hepsi kendi içinde bazı vazifeleri ve mesajları taşıyorlar.
Bu mesajlar, örnek olarak, bizim sadece renk olarak mesajlarla donatılı. Burada tabiatın işlevsel, üreme dürtüsünden kaynaklanan mesajlar. Rengin güzellikle hiçbir alakası yok. Kuş örneği. Sinyaller hiçbir zaman şuurlu ve bilgi içinde olan şeyler değil, tamamen organik ve doğanın o yaratıklara veya o kişilere vermiş olduğu vazife. Portakal örneği. Bangok’ta mabet çiçekleri.
SEMBOLLER ise tabiatla hiç alâkası olmayan, tamamen insanın kendi yarattığı ve kendisinden başka da hiçbir yaratıkla paylaşamadığı bir olgu… Sinyaller yorumlanmadıkları sürece tamamen saf bir ses, duyabildiğimiz frekanslar içindekiler mesela kuşlar gibi. Ama duymadığımız bütün yaratıklardaki sesler de mevcut. Bu sanki bir yabancı dili duymak gibi. Bunlardan anlam çıkaramadığımız sürece soyut şekillerden ibaret kalıyor ve yorumlamamız da sadece belli değerlerle oluşuyor: kendileriyle alâkaları yok. Sembol ise bundan bir adım ötede insanın kişi olarak tabiatın dışına çıkmasından itibaren başlayan bir biçimlendirme, ve örnekleyerek o güce yaklaşmak, o gücü belli bir şekilde tasvir ederek o güce karşı güç kazanabilmek; bu kaygıyla başlıyor.
Yani bu gördüğümüz kuzey Fransa’daki mağara resimlerinde, burada hiçbir sanat kaygısı yok; bu bir sanat değil... Bu tamamen insanoğlunun korkusunu yenmek için yahut avlayacağı hayvanla aynı güce sahip olup onu daha yakından avlayabilmesi için kullandığı bir sembol dürtüsü. Bu sembol aynı zamanda buradan itibaren iki türlü oluşuyor; birincisi tanımadığımız şeyleri veya tanımakta güçlük çektiğimiz şeyleri tasvir ederek, zihnimizde o kavramları yaratarak onları sembolleştirdiğimiz takdirde, onların bize verdikleri korkuyu yeniyoruz. çok mühim bir miktarda… Diğer taraftan bir de bu sembolleri yaptığımız takdirde, çizdiğimiz takdirde yahut tanıdığımız takdirde, onlarla eşleşmiş oluyoruz. Bunun tabiatla hiçbir alakası yok. Maske ve büyücü örneği. Güce karşı eşleşmiş oldukları ve o gücü kendilerinin de kazandıkları, güce karşı aynısını kopya etmek... Fotograf çektirmeme, resme karşı olma olgusu. Kabile örneği. Senegal’de yapı (Alliance franco-Sénégalaise?’)
Semboller bu şekilde gelişirken, bu sembollerin bir süre sonra dejenere olması da söz konusu.... Sembollerin, kavramlar olarak kargaşası... Dünyevi ve uhrevi olarak ayırdettiğimiz sembollerin “napoleonik” bir süreç içinde tamamen devalüe edilmesi cami üzerinde uçak örneği. Yanıltıcı rol… Yanlış semboller sanki yanlış sinyaller gibi size çok başka anlamlar getirebiliyor. Bu keyfi olduğu için insanlann hangi sembollerle neyi ifade etmek istediği oldukça sübjektif bir şey… Fakat sentaktik açıdan yanıltıcı oluyor...
Şişli’deki kitsch: strüktürel morfolojiyi bilenler için kavram kargaşasına sürüklüyor insanı... Fakat seçilen ögeler çeşitli zamanlardan alınan sembollerin bütünleşmesi şeklinde tezahur ediyor. Yanlış veya doğru değil, ama sentaktik açıdan ne anlattığını anlamak çok da kolay değil, kendisinin haricinde.
Toplumda sembollerin bir de manevi sorumluğu var. Toplumsal sorumluluk. Bu etapta bu sembollerin bu kadar serbestçe ve rahat bir şekilde birbirlerine karışmalarının arkasında meslek olarak ele aldığımızda; şimdi, post-modernizm diye bir olgu var. Bunun tarifinde tabi yine de sentaktik oluşumun zorunluluğunu -ki bunu çok ciddi biçimde hırpaladılar- bulmak mümkün değil. Hindistan’daki ilk minare, Yugoslavya’da Ağa Han ödülü almış bir cami ve minaresi; düşeyde vurgulanması, onun minare olduğunu az çok anlatıyor… Üstteki sembol ise müellife ait bir sembol, nedenini anlamak biraz güç.
Süsleme de bir semboller dizisi ama toplumun belli bir kesimine veya kendi içindeki topluluğa o anlamı ifade ediyor sadece. Onun dışına çıktığı zaman çok spesifik olduğu için evrensel değerini yitirmeye başlıyor. Bu da bir başka minare… Türkiye örneklerinden… Burada belli bir cami morfolojisi için gösterilen çabaları ve sembolleri görmekteyiz. Devamlı olarak sembolleri arzu ettiğimiz biçimde yorumlayarak veya yeni semboller yaratarak yeni konotasyonlar, yeni gramerler uydurmak..... Sanıyorum insanoğlu çok fazla sembol zaten üretmiş, ve bunların da çoğunu, zaten hemen hemen hepsini dejenere etmiş. Ve bu sembollerin içlerinde hala kullanabileceğimiz çok fazla sernbol varken, bunların yeni yeni semboller haline dönüştürülmesi çok büyük sorumluluk isteyen bir husus, meslekte... O sorumluluğu almak için de bu konularda çok fazla birikiminiz olması lâzım. Hiç olmazsa sembolleri bilmek gibi bir sorumluluk var, o bakımdan bunlar bana ilginç örnekler geliyor. Örneğin Turgut Bey’in mezarı, yedi değişik sembol biraraya getirilerek tek bir sembol haline getirme uğraşısıdır. Bu ise, çok başka sembollerin biraraya getirildiği Kennedy’nin mezarı. Turgut Bey’inki etkileme amacı güdüyor ama, etkilerken bazen yanlış etkiler de yaratabiliyor insanda... Sembolün bunun gibi çok büyük etkileri var. Yani sembol lisansiye olmayı gerektiren ciddi bir silah gibi.
Sembollerin çift anlam taşıma olasılıkları vardır. Zaman zaman çok başarılı, kimi zaman ise çok başarısız olabilirler. ‘50 üstü jenerasyon için, mesela Grundig teyp ömeğini, görüntüsü ve möblesiyle beraber ele alalım. Su kuleleri; siluete su kulesinin su taşımasının morfolojik yapısını. Grundig ile möble arasındaki kavram karmaşası burada yok. Mantar tipolojisi aynen Wright’ın Johnson Wax binasındakinin tıpa tıp aynısıdır. İkiz anlamı kazandırma epey üzerinde durduğum bir konudur. Örneğin bu gazete binasında, hem fonksiyon hem de tanıtım amacıyla, binanın ortasında havanın transfer edilmesi için bir boşluk kurgulanmıştır. Havalandırmanın buradan transfer edilmesi sırasında, bunun doğal olarak getirdiği konik havanın emişine uyan morfolojiyi en üst katta bir orta dolaşım yerine, bir kozmik harita ile donatarak bunun o kattaki anlamını değiştirdik. Ve bu etrafında dolaşılan başka bir öge, başka bir sembol halinde gelişti. Pendulum. Hava akışının kendi içindeki dinamizmini devamlı olarak yansıtan, onu simgeleyen bir unsur. Rotunda ve ortasındaki davlumbazın o kattaki görünümü, ..kozmik hatta tamamen sembolik. Asansörler dinamik düzeyde kütüphaneler haline getirildi. Asansör şaftının dört asansörün arkasındaki beton duvarları 20. asrın kütüphanesi olan tamamen şeffaf yüzeyler olarak kurguladık. 13 katlık bir yükseklikte 20. asrı her şeyiyle görüntülüyor. Son katta ise 20. asrın uzayla olan ilişkiyi sembolize eden son kat. Binanın dışında da aynı tutum sürmekte... Yazı, tel modüller şeklinde çözüldü. Tel yuvarlak halde döndürülerek gazetenin negatif olarak -gölgelerle- yazılarını yazdık. Şehirlerde semboller ağırlıklı olarak röperleri de teşkil ederler. Bir saat kulesi, caminin minare düzeni, kilise çan saati, mesajlar ve sinyaller yayan olaylardır ki bunlar mahalle düzeyinde, köy düzeyinde, şehir düzeyinde size röperlerinizi tanımlarlar. Sembollerin esasında en gizemli ve en güzel tarafı da budur. Kendi esas fonksiyonlarının dışında bir anlam da getirebilmeleri. Aradaki derin boşluk iki sokağı birbirine birleştiriyor. Güneş battığında gazetenin gölgesini düşürerek hareketli bir olay yaratıyor. Mahalleliye bu duvarın bir mesaj taşımasını düşündük.
İnsanoğlu sembolleri kendine göre yorumlamaya açık ve yorumlayabiliyor. Esasında yorumlanan İŞARETLER. Çünkü onların hiçbir sembolik değeri yok. İnsan tabiatın dışında yorumladığı anda sembolleştirmek durumunda. Burada zoomorfolojik ve benzeri sinyallerin, yorumsal olarak sembolleştirilmesi çok, örneğin bu havaalanı... Aynı vertebranın ve çözümde de torsonun strüktürel potansiyelini çok iyi analiz edip onu aynı şekilde kirişin taşıma gücüne ve bu dalgalanmalarla da rijiditesine çok büyük katkısını sağlayan bir düzlem. Bu da bir sinyalin sembole dönüştürülmesi ve sonucu. Burada da hemen hemen aynı kavramlar var. Bu daha enteresan çünkü burda sinyalin sembole dönüştürülmesinde daha ilkel bir kavram var, yani nerdeyse bu da bir sinyal şeklinde düşünülmüş. Buradan esinlenmesi belki de bizlerin benzetme yahut zoomorfolojik ve strüktürel, yapı strüktürü arasındaki ilişkiden geliyor. Fakat kesin olan birşey var ki "rib architecture" dediğimiz yani kaburganın formasyonu ve onun direnç ve statik potansiyelini -Kaidi Hastanesi’nde, Afrika’da, bu da ödüllü bir projedir- fevkalade aynen yansıtması insanoğlunun sinyalden sembole geçişteki ilginç geçiş serüvenini burada işaretliyor. Ben buna benzer bir strüktür yaptım, bu Çerkezköy’de yaptığım fabrika binası. Genel görünümünü gösteriyorum. Bu vertebranın tek bir elemanı ve burdaki strüktürel potansiyelde gördüğünüz gibi bu gövde… Esas devam eden bu… Bunlar da arkadaki adaleleri taşıması açısından kullandığım yaylar. Ve bunlar tabi ki, belli aralıklarla, merkezlerle devam ediyor. Ben bundan buna geçtim. Aynı şekilde aşağı yukarı 46 m. geçtik bu şekilde. Ve yine aynı buradaki takıları her iki yönde takarak ve 12 m. bu yönde geçerek, 45 m. böyle şu gövde olarak, bir kiriş strüktürü dizayn ettim. Bunun aralarında kalan boşluklarda da tepe ışıkları oturdu, Bunu da verterbra olarak kabul edebiliriz. Sonuç bu oldu. Bu 12 m.lik modül tamamen kaplamanın getirdiği ekonomik standart veya benim tercihlerimden doğdu. Çevrede de bir dolaşım, distribüsyon alanı var. Ortada da 120m.ye 45 m.lik tek bir boş hacim var; makine parkı... Bu da tekstil binaları için ilginç bir sonuçtu çünkü hemen hemen ilk binadır hatırladığım, bildiğim kadarıyla dünyada açık parklar yapan. Ama tabi makine teknolojisi, üretim teknolojısi o kadar ilerledi ki, artık bunları kompartmanlar haline getirmek zorunluluğu kalkmıştı. Onu izlediğimiz için, burada buna cesaret edebildik. Bunun çift olmasının nedeni tamamen ebadı tek bir taneyle geçip, çok ağır olan kendi ölü yükünü burda bölerek yapmaktı. Onun dışında bunlar 15’er m. olarak üç parça halinde geldi ve yukarda monte ettik. Bu da aynı binanın idare kısmı.
Bu gibi izlenimler sadece zoomorfolojik değil, bütün başka ürünlerin, başka teknolojilerin, başka yaşam biçimlerinin, bu doğal olabilir yahut insanoğlunun yarattığı başka buluşlar da olabilir... Bunları çok yakından izlediğiniz zaman mesleğe geçirebileceğiniz çok güzel şeyler yakalayabiliyorsunuz . Tamamen bir uçak kanadından aldığım bir morfolojik değerlendirme sonucunda çıkmış bir konsoldur... Strüktür esasında tamamen yine uçaklarda kullandığımız “monokok” strüktürlerden oluşuyor. Yani içinde petek var ve ondan sonra da satıhsal... Hemen hemen dünyadaki en güçlü satıhsal malzeme olarak da bunu tanımlayabiliriz. Hafif alüminyum ve onun karışımlarıyla yapılan bir strüktür. Özellikle denedim burada, kok-perçinli. Aerodinamik sözcüklerle tanımlayabilirsek hücum tarafı ve tabi rüzgarın vurmasıyla olan ilişkisini de hesapladığımız zaman bu konsolu çok basit bir bağlantıyla oraya koyabildik; yoksa Çerkezköy’de bunu uçurur.
Tasarımın belli ARKETlPLERI var, yani buna “iLK BIÇİMLER” diye bir ad taktık ne kadar doğru veya yanlış bilemiyorum. Bunlar tamamen sembol ama bu semboller evrenselleşrniş hatta artık dünyanın bazı yerlerinde bazen de birbirinden tamamen olarak geliştirilmiş ama aynı hizmeti veren ögeler. Bazen görüntüsü, -bu 78’de sanıyorum Shanghai’da çektim- burada da görüldüğü gibi bu geçiş, iki dünya ve iki dünyanın arasındaki ilişkide, insanoğlunun tabiatla olan ilişkisini çok net olarak açıklayan bir olgu, çünkü tabiatı anlamak onu yorumlamak istediği anda zaten tabiatın karşısında ve o ikilemin içine düşmüş oluyor insan. Zen bunu çok iyi bir şekilde yakalamış olan bir felsefe. Ve bu felsefenin de içinde iki dünya olarak, bir sizin sübjektif dünyanız, bir de onu dışlamış olduğunuz ikinci ve izlediğiniz dünya. Biri sembollerin, diğeri sinyallerin dünyası diyebiliriz.
Bu bizim Osmanlı’nın çıkmaz sokak paternini izliyorlar ve onlar da öyle yapıyorlar; mahallenin içinden dışardaki dünyaya bakıyorum ve dolayısıyla o Zen boşluğundan geçerek mahalleye giriyorsunuz, sizin o noktada dünyanızın değiştiğini ifade ediyor. Bu da dışardan o dünyaya bakış. Bunun içinde barlar var, insanlar birbirleriyle orada oturuyorlar, vs. Bu Zen ve Yi haricinde yine de bir çıkmaz sokak prensibinde Osmanlı’nın da ürettiği bir felsefe; maalesef bu da 1950’lerdeki İstanbul planlarında; “cul-de-sac”ların dipleri açılarak özellikle planlarında bir kültürün yok edilmesiyle sonuçlandı. Aynı Zen deliğini İspanya’da bir binada izleyebiliyorsunuz. Ve dış dünyayla kendi içindeki dünyanın arasındaki boşluğu yine bir Zen boşluğuyla sembolize ediyor. Kırklareli’nde geçen asırdan kalma bir yapı. Daha ziyade bir yırtık, tamamen biçimsel bir sembol, hiçbir fonksiyonu içermiyor ama yine de kullanıyor. Bu benim Ordu’da yaptığım 1979-80 senesindeki ev, ve misafirhanesinin resmi… Misafirhanenin eve bakmasından dolayı, bir iç dünya yarattık. O iç dünyanın Karadeniz’e bakmasından dolayı yine bir Zen yırtığıyla iç dünya ve dış dünya ayrımını yaptık çünkü tamamen Karadeniz’in zorunluluklarından dolayı, yuvarlak bir dış sofa etrafında yayılmış olan odalardan tertip edilmiş bir plan. Ve orda odalardan çıktığınız anda o dış sofa bu delikle sizin dış dünyayla olan ilişkinizi sağlıyor. Planı gördüğünüz anda bu sizin hemen aklınıza geliyor, çünkü arketip olarak değişmemiş ve değişmesi çok zor olan bir sembol ve dolayısıyla bir prototip. Bunu değiştirmeye çalıştığınız zaman başınıza problem almış oluyorsunuz çünkü bitirmek için çok nedenleriniz olması gerekiyor. Bu da Prost’un planı içindeki bizim açık Hava tiyatrosu. Burada da bir değişiklik yok. Çünkü tekerlek her zaman yuvarlak olmak zorunda.
Şimdi de siluetlerin sembolleşmesine gelmek istiyorum. Semboller esasında sembolik değerlerini arayarak gelişiyor ama, esasında sembolden başka yapacak hiçbirşey yok, zaten her şey sembol. Sembolleri denerken yalnız bu sembollerin ilerde size neler getireceğini, hangi ortamda, hangi mesajlar vereceğini kestirmek güç. Sadece Eiffelle gibi, ya da benzeri gibi özellikle o siluete oraya o katkıyı dünya fuarlarında yapılan bazı şeyleri sembolize eden yapılar, bunlar haricinde, yani sırf sembol olmak üzere yahut sembolü sırf tanıtım amacıyla orada kullanmak dışındaki yapılarda siluet sonuçları izlenmeye değer sonuçlardır. Nitekim bu yapıda, Saladin Camisinde, siluet sembolünden çok, gücü göstermek amacı ağırlıklıdır. San Gimignano’da da siluet konusu var. Burada gördüğünüz kuleler, hepsi birer aileye ait; başta dar bir sur ile sınırlanmış olan küçük bir İtalyan dağ şehrindeki, Toskana’daki ihtiyaçlarıyla gelen kule mimarisi zamanla aralarındaki rekabetle prestij yarışına dönüşüyor, ama sonunda bu San Gimignano’nun simgesi halinde ve siluetini oluşturuyor. New York’un ünlü mimarlarından Yamasaki’nin Twin Towers, World Trade Center. Bu gibi binaların şehir siluetine ne katıp katmayacağının ve ne kadar sembolik olması yahut olmaması gerektiği hakkında mimara düşen büyük sorumluluk var. Tabi takdir izleyenlere ait, çünkü ben sadece sorumluluğun ne kadar büyük ve zor olduğunu burada vurgulamak için bu slaytı koydum. Burası Kamboçya, 12. Asır Ankor Harebeleri.. Üstteki stupaların bir fonksiyonları yok ama sembolik olarak burayı tanıtmak için o zamanki yapı anlayışı içinde.. bir anda sembolleştiriveriyor oradaki mabedi… Bunlar hep aranılan anlamlı ve derece derece de sembollerin denenmesi sonucunda gelinen noktalar... .(başka örnekler) Bu da bizim İstanbul siluetimiz. Hiçbir siluet kaygısı taşımayan bir yapı kavramı sizi bir anda çok ciddi bir şehirsel bir kontrpuan sağlayan dört tane blok için izin alabiliyorsunuz ve bunu yaptığınız zaman bu yatay düzeyde ne kadar uzun olduğunu muhakkak görmeniz lazım. Bunların apartman olmalarının dışında ikilem taşıyan sembollerden bahsediyorum, bu burada bunun aksi bir örneği ifade ediyor. Esasında tabi bütün bu gördüklerimiz hepsi anlamsal dünyanın parçaları. Bunlar bizden başka kimseye birşey ifade etmiyor. Bu anlamsal dünyanın ögeleri olarak nasıl ki lisanda akıcı olmak belli bir yetenek, beceri istiyorsa, sanıyorum bu sembolleri de seçerek bunların ne kadar evrensel olmaları, ne kadar olmamaları, nerelerde bunlara kendiniz de birşeyler katabilirsiniz veya katamazsınız. Bunlar bence mimarlığın hemen hemen bütün sorumluluklarını ve sorunlarını da tanımlayan kısımlar. Zaten orada çok fazla ileriye gitmeden becerinizi sadece seçici rol almak suretiyle tanımlarsanız bence yeterli mimariyi yapmış oluyorsunuz. Ondan sonrası galiba artık mimari değil, fakat sizin kendi probleminizi mimariye yansıtmak şeklinde oluşuyor.
Ben o mimarlardan olmamaya çalıştım hep… Teşekkür ederim.
